Essex continued their impressive run of results with an excellent 60–43 victory over Cumberland.
Essex made a strong start, with the centre-court trio of Nicole Alves, Sarah Biss and Rebecca Wilks quickly taking control of the game. Leah Hayzelden and Maddie Oshodi were finding plenty of opportunities and making the most of them. By the midway point of the first quarter, Essex had established a 7–4 lead.
Essex continued to dominate across the court for the remainder of the quarter. However, in defence, Emma Thorogood and Renee Hurley faced a difficult challenge against Cumberland’s tall shooter, who used her height effectively and proved extremely accurate. Despite this, Essex finished the first quarter with an 18–14 advantage.
Essex started the second quarter strongly and quickly extended their lead to seven goals. They were generally the stronger side and enjoyed periods of play in which they scored several goals without reply. By half-time, Essex had built a commanding 35–24 lead.
The third quarter saw Essex make a number of changes, allowing the whole squad to take part. Louise Acons, Rebecca Mead and Johanne Linehan joined the action, and Essex continued to control proceedings. A particularly impressive spell late in the quarter saw Essex score six unanswered goals to establish a 17-goal advantage, although Cumberland responded towards the end of the quarter.
Going into the final quarter, Essex had effectively secured the points. They nevertheless maintained their momentum, scoring three quick goals at the start of the quarter to extend their lead to 51–34.
The remainder of the match gradually petered out, with both sides making a number of mistakes. When the final whistle sounded, Essex had secured a convincing 60–43 victory, continuing their excellent run of form and collecting more valuable points.
