Essex Open win Regional League opener

Regional League Division 2

Essex Open 56 Telstars 36

Essex Open got their regional league season off to an excellent start with a convincing 56-36 win over Telstars at Harrow Lodge Sports Centre.

Both sides struggled to get into a rhythm early on, with numerous mistakes preventing either side taking the initiative. However good shooting saw the teams getting on the scoresheet and as a result halfway through the first quarter Essex trailed 5-7. Telstars goal attack shot particularly well often from long range. As the quarter progressed Nicole Alves, Johanne Linehan and Rebecca Wilks started to take control of the centre court. In the circle Leah Hayzelden and Maddie Oshodi took full advantage of the opportunities created by giving Essex a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Defensively Essex were very solid with Emma Shaw and Jasmin Odeogberin making life difficult for the Telstars shooters. In the second quarter Essex dominated. For long periods of the quarter Essex scored freely. Consequently, when the half time whistle was blown Essex had built a match winning 34-18 lead.

Essex took the opportunity to give game time to all the squad. In the third quarter Essex introduced Renee Hurley, Rebecca Mead, Sophia Sefton, Emma Thorogood and Atronna Sebyala. It took a while for the new players to get into the game and as a result the third quarter was a much closely fought affair however with a quarter to go the points were effectively in the bag as Essex led 46 28.

The last quarter followed much the same as the previous one with Essex making several changes which meant it took time for the team to settle. Essex managed to score 10 goals against 8 in reply from Telstars.

This means that when the final whistle went, Essex had secured their first points of the regional league season winning 56-36.

Essex Open A begin season in style

Essex Open A 66 New Campbell Blue 33

This was a comfortable victory for Essex in their first game of the new season. The foundation of the victory was an excellent start to the first quarter. Essex created numerous chances, which were well taken by Leah Hayzeldon and Maddie Oshodi. As a result, Essex found themselves 10-1 in front with not more than 5 minutes played. Cambell were always going to find it hard to get back into the game with such a deficit. To their credit, Campbell battled well, and at the end of the first quarter, the score was 16-7. The second quarter was much closer and indeed at the end of it both sides had scored 14 goals each. With Essex leading 30-21 at halftime Campbell needed to start the second half well. However, Essex came out brightly, scoring 5 goals with only one in response. This halted any hope of a Cambell recovery in the third quarter.  Essex had Jasmin Odegberin  and Renée Hurley in defence. Cambell found this a formidable combination and could only manage to score 6 goals in the quarter.  At the other end Essex continued to score regularly with chances created by a powerful centre court combination of Johanne Linehan, Nocole Alves and Rebecca Wilks. With a quarter to go,  Essex led 46-27.

Essex totally dominated the last quarter as Cambell ran out of steam and Essex scored 15 goals with Cambell managing 2 in response before a late rally gave the scoreline a more balanced view. However, at the end Essex ran out 66-33 winners. A massive boost for Essex was the return of Emma Shaw who returned to the Side following a long absence with injury.

Next week, Essex start their regional league campaign with a home fixture against Telstars at Harrow Lodge 10. 30 a.m. centre pass
